Your First Conversation with Claude

Never talked to an AI before? Here's how to have your first real conversation with Claude — and what to expect.

Opening up an AI chat for the first time can feel a little strange. What do you even say? Is there a right way to do this? The short answer: no. There's no wrong way to start. But a few simple ideas can make your first conversation much more useful.

Start with something real

The best first message isn't "Hello" — it's something you actually need help with right now. Maybe you're trying to write a tricky email. Maybe you want to understand something you read in the news. Maybe you just want to know what to cook for dinner.

Try: "I have leftover chicken and about 20 minutes. What should I make for dinner?"

Or: "Can you explain what a large language model is in plain English?"

Real questions get real answers.

Be specific — but don't overthink it

The more context you give Claude, the better the response. But you don't need to write a perfect prompt. Just talk like you'd talk to a helpful colleague.

Instead of: "Write me an email."

Try: "I need to email my landlord asking if I can get a dog. We have a good relationship but the lease says no pets. Can you help me write something friendly but persuasive?"

See the difference? The second version gives Claude something to work with.

You can push back

If Claude's first response isn't quite right, say so. "That's too formal" or "Can you make it shorter?" or "I don't think that's accurate — can you check?" Claude handles feedback well and will try again.

This is one of the things that makes AI conversations genuinely useful — it's a back-and-forth, not a one-shot attempt.

It's okay to experiment

You won't break anything. Claude doesn't get frustrated. Try weird questions, explore unexpected topics, ask it to explain something three different ways until it clicks. The more you use it, the more you'll discover what it's good at — and where to take its answers with a grain of salt.

Go ahead. Type your first message.
