What is Claude?

A plain-English introduction to Claude — what it is, who made it, and why it might just change the way you work.

If you've heard people talking about AI assistants but aren't quite sure what the fuss is about, you're in the right place. Claude is an AI assistant made by Anthropic — a company founded by researchers who believe AI should be safe, honest, and genuinely useful.

It's like a very capable conversation partner

Think of Claude as someone you can have a real back-and-forth with. You type something — a question, a request, a half-baked idea — and Claude responds thoughtfully. It can write, explain, summarize, brainstorm, and reason through problems with you.

Unlike a search engine that returns links, Claude actually engages with what you're asking. It reads your full message, thinks about context, and gives you a real answer.

Who made it?

Claude is made by Anthropic, an AI safety company based in San Francisco. Anthropic was founded in 2021 by former members of OpenAI, including Dario Amodei and Daniela Amodei. Their focus from the start has been on building AI that's safe and beneficial — not just capable.

What can it actually do?

Here's a short list of things people use Claude for every day:

Writing help — drafting emails, editing essays, or finding the right words when you're stuck.

Research and summarizing — paste in a long article or document and ask Claude to explain it simply.

Brainstorming — need ideas for a project, a gift, or a business name? Claude is surprisingly good at this.

Learning new things — ask Claude to explain a concept at whatever level you need, from "explain it like I'm 10" to deep technical detail.

Is it free?

Yes — you can use Claude for free at claude.ai. There's also a paid plan (Claude Pro) that gives you access to more powerful models and higher usage limits. For most everyday tasks, the free version is a great place to start.

Ready to try it? Just go to claude.ai, create a free account, and say hello. There's no wrong way to start.
